Scalling and polishing

Q. What is scalling and polishing?

It is a method for professional teeth cleaning. Scalling is a popular, non-surgical treatment which removes the infected plaque - calculus - from the surface of teeth. This plaque, if not treated, may lead to periodontal problems, deepening the periodontal pocket. This creates ideal conditions for the development of non-aerobic bacteria. When the bacteria start to multiply they cause an infection of the gums which may lead to a decay of the bone in the jaw. This leads to a situation where the tooth becomes more and more wobbly and may fall out by itself. At this stage tooth rescue becomes very complicated. Healing the tissue around the tooth requires a surgery on the gum.

Q. What is the treatment like?

Scalling is a deep cleaning of the tooth above and below the gum line in order to remove plaque and the build up of calculus. It requires the use of specialist equipment - usually an ultrasound device. It is a small head, which vibrates with ultrasound frequency dislodging the calculus. As the vibrations are minimal, it does not cause damage to the surface of the tooth. Most dentists recommend professional tooth cleaning every 6 - 12 months. More frequent cleaning may be required during complex treatments for other problems.

Q. What is the outcome?

Correct hygiene of the mouth prevents many teeth and gums problems resulting in a healthy mouth. What’s more, the mouth is the gate for the entire human body. A healthy mouth helps to keep a healthy body.
